Symbols represent objects, pictures, sounds, written words or something like that and signify concepts, ideas, notions, beliefs and feelings. Some of them are very common, such as white rectangle on red background standing for “Stop”, others have special sense and stimulate deep feelings. The examples of such symbols are the Judaic Star of David and the crucifix in Christianity. We are surrounded by symbols. Every day we face something that has a symbolic sense. You'll find symbols on money, in commercials, music compositions, books, politics and so on. To realize the meaning of a symbol a viewer should know what this symbol implies. For example, the Chinese symbol of yin and yang looks like a funny picture with black and white colors for people that do not know the underlying significance of this sign. They can enjoy its aesthetic side, but they don't see more than that. Quite the contrary, if a person understands the origin of the symbol he sees not only a simple picture, but an idea of deep correlation of things in our life. During the history of humankind symbols were widely applied in art. In such a way, one item on a painting tells a lot about the concepts of the painter, his views on life and beliefs. To understand the secret sense of a music composition or a book we have to be very attentive to details. Sometimes we need to read critics on a definite piece of art to understand the idea of the author. This is because the language of symbols isn't so simple. So what are the most widespread symbols in art and what do they refer to? Amongst the most common symbols applied in pieces of art are a book, a candle, a clock and a mirror. A book usually represents learning and knowledge. In case you see a lightened candle on a picture it's for the most part a symbol of time passing or faith in God. On the other hand, an extinguished candle stands for mourning and death. A clock signifies the time passing. In this regard the world-known painting of Salvador Dali known as “Melting clocks” refers to an idea that nothing in our life is in keeping with some rules. And finally, a mirror implies efforts to find the truth, but in some cases it just signifies the vanity. In such a way, symbols are everywhere in our world. We just should pay a little more attention to details to see them.
